ASME B16.47
ANSI B16.5
API 605
Slip-On (SO)
Key Details and Specifications:
- Sizes: Typically range from 1/2 inch to 24 inches (up to 60 inches customized).
- Pressure Ratings: Class 150 to 2500# (generally not used above Class 600 due to lower strength).
- Materials: Available in Carbon Steel (ASTM A105), Stainless Steel (304/316), and Alloy Steel.
- Facing: Commonly Raised Face (RF) for better sealing and Reduced Tight Joint (RTJ), or Flat Face (FF).
- Dimensions: Adhere to ASME B16.5 (for sizes up to 24") and ASME B16.47 (for larger sizes).
- Welding: Requires two fillet welds (outside and inside) to ensure joint integrity, as they lack full penetration.
Advantages:
- Low Cost: Lower fabrication and purchasing costs.
- Ease of Alignment: Simple to align pipe and flange because the pipe slides into the bore.
- Lower Accuracy Required: Less stringent requirements for pipe cutting precision.
Disadvantages:
- Lower Strength: Approximately 2/3 of the strength of welding neck flanges.
- Weakness Under Fatigue: Generally not suitable for high-pressure, high-temperature, or high-cyclic-load applications.
- Double Welding: Requires both interior and exterior welding, which adds to labor costs.
- Cooling water lines.
- Firefighting systems.
- Low-pressure compressed air systems.
- General process piping for non-critical services.
