SOCKETWELD
A socket weld flange is a metal pipe flange used primarily for small-diameter, high-pressure piping systems (typically 2 inches). It features a recessed, counter-bored area (socket) where the pipe is inserted and secured with a single external fillet weld. These are commonly used in hydraulic and steam systems.
Key Features and Specifications:
- Dimensions: Governed by ASME B16.5 for sizes
” to 24”, though typically used up to 3” NPS. - Pressure Ratings: Class 150 to 2500.
- Installation: The pipe is inserted into the socket until it hits the shoulder, then pulled back approximately 1.6mm(1/16")to create an expansion gap before welding.
- Weld Type: A single fillet weld is applied around the hub.
- Face Types: Available as Raised Face (RF) or Ring Type Joint (RTJ)
Advantages:
- Strong & Leak-Proof: Ideal for hazardous or high-pressure fluids.
- Easy Installation: No specialized pipe beveling is required compared to butt-weld joints.
- Alignment: The socket holds the pipe in place during fitting.
Common Applications:
- Industries: Petrochemical, oil/gas refining, pharmaceutical, and shipbuilding.
- Usage: Small-diameter pipelines, high-pressure, or high-temperature lines.
Common Applications
- Industries: Widely used in chemical processing, oil and gas refineries, power generation, and water treatment.
- Fluid Types: Ideal for systems carrying toxic, flammable, or expensive media where leak prevention is critical.
- Constraints: Not recommended for highly corrosive or erosive systems due to the potential for solid buildup in the expansion gap
